Here are a few simple techniques to figure out what could be leaking and what might have caused it:
To begin with, place an old white sheet or a large piece of white cardboard under your Mercedes-Benz and leave it there overnight.
When the sun comes up, pull the sheet out and have a look. If your leak has any of the following colors, you’ll have a pretty good idea as to what the leak is.
- Bright Green - More than likely, you’re looking at a little
radiator coolant. If it’s slippery to the touch, that’s definitely
what you’ve got.
- Light or Dark Brown - Chances are you’ve got a bit of an oil
leak. If you change your oil on a regular basis, the color will be
a bit more on the light brown side of things. If not, you’ll be
looking at a darker shade of brown.
- Bright Blue - Looks like your windshield washer fluid isn’t quite
making it to the windshield. Winter windshield fluids can also be
orange, pink or yellow.
- Light Brown - Ok, this part isn’t going to be a whole lot of fun.
Take a deep whiff. Does it smell like rotten eggs? If so, you’re
most likely leaking 90-weight oil or gear lube. It’s ok to plug
your nose now. This fluid is probably leaking from the rear axle
center section or the manual transmission (if you have one,
that is).
- Red - No, your Mercedes-Benz isn’t bleeding. However, it is
leaking one of two fairly important fluids: automatic
transmission fluid or power steering fluid. You’re going to want
to have these at their proper levels to have a properly running
vehicle.
- Clear - We have one of two possible culprits here. You’re either
looking at power steering fluid or some good old fashioned H2O
from the condenser on your A/C unit.
- Light Yellow - You’re looking at a crucial fluid here: brake fluid.
This leak needs to be stopped so you and your Mercedes-Benz
can safely do the same.
- Amber - Chances are your nose will know what you’re dealing
with before your eyes do. You’re looking at a gasoline leak. But
your nose already knew that, didn’t it?
Now, the location of
your leak could also be a key indicator as to what you’re leaking.
For example, you probably won’t have an anti-freeze leak in the
rear of your Mercedes-Benz. No matter where the leak is coming from,
or what color it is, just bring your Mercedes-Benz into American
Service Center to get the leak fixed and get you back on the road
in no time flat.
